Domaine Horcher, Mittelwihr, Alsace
A nine hectare estate, spread over 40 vineyards in five different villages.
2005 Pinot Blanc, AC Alsace, Domaine Horcher
A very slight nose that is rather dull and uninteresting. Initially the palate
is essentially similar, though it does open up into some really quite full
flavours. But it is not an especially good example. OK/Good. 81/100
2005 Riesling Cuvée Sélection, AC Alsace, Domaine
Horcher
A very slight, gently minerally nose that lacks much interest. On the palate
there’s not a lot to redeem it, and overall it lacks any interest or character
whatsoever. 77/100
2005 Pinot Gris Cuvée Sélection, AC Alsace, Domaine
Horcher, 13%
A light, very gentle nose with little character. At last, there is some
character and flavour on the palate: this is a very precise expression of pinot
gris. Very clean, with good balance and depth. Ultimately it’s rather simple,
but there is some clear terroir influence, I think. Very Good. 86/100
2004 Gewurztraminer Reserve, AC Alsace, Domaine Horcher
A nice gentle, elegant, gewurz nose. A bit disappointing on the palate, and
it’s very straightforward, with a huge amount of rose flavours. Good/Very
Good. 85/100
2004 Gewurztraminer Grand Cru Mandelberg, AC Alsace
Grand Cru, Domaine Horcher, 13%
A very restrained nose. Pure and very direct palate. Towards the finish, there
is a very hard coarse streak. Unimpressive. Good. 84/100
2002 Pinot Gris Vendanges Tardives, AC Alsace, Domaine
Horcher, 13%
A rustic, off-sweet pinot gris nose with some pear fruit. Very focussed palate:
it has an enormous purity, but it also lacks any depth and interest. OK/Good.
81/100
2003 Gewurztraminer Vendanges Tardives, AC Alsace,
Domaine Horcher, 13%
The nose has lychees and a very artificial rose scent – all very reminiscent of
ladies’ soap. The palate is very simple – very pure, but ultimately very dull
and lacking character. Good. 82/100
